High-tech takes swimmers to the next level
A joint project including academia, industry and active swimmers can help the athletes improve their technique significantly, and possibly cut up to half a second on the 50 meters free style.
Swimmers have, traditionally, improved their results by training, training and more training. Even though coaches and swimmers constantly strive for the perfect technique, they have, so far, not used advanced technology to any greater extent in this quest.
Capturing a swimmer’s motions from the starting block, through the air, breaking the surface, continuing under water and then back to the surface, is a challenging task. But by combining groundbreaking underwater cameras with a land-based system – equipment and software provided by Qualisys – over and underwater motion can be combined seamlessly into a combined capture.
