Injuries among elite athletes in competitive sports are common and have for long been well documented. What is perhaps less known and understood, are injuries related to learning and performing music.
At Texas Center for Music & Medicine a team of music educators, clinicians, and research scientists have come together to study, treat, and prevent various medical problems related to music performance.
One of UNT’s current graduate students that focus on understanding and preventing piano-related medical problems, is Eri Yoshimura, a doctorate of Musical Arts student in piano performance. Eri recently conducted a study involving 30 pianists to study hand kinematics. Data from 8-minute performances were collected using three Oqus 100 cameras, two camcorders and four force sensors.
